DARWIN'S FINCHES

Houston, TX

about +
Darwin's Finches produces Explosive manic RAWK music that is rooted in cathartic psychosis. They believe in freedom of expression at all costs & have played anywhere from the corners of the street to high brow composer salons. The band is idyllic in its approach to creating a story YOU are part of.

Darwin's Finches began as a few biology students on Galveston island creating social experiments and playing shows around the local bars, which were extremely geared towards tourists and sported nothing but classic rock cover bands. After winning over the regular crowd at an open mic/jam that the Finches regularly infiltrated, they began to amass a reputation on the small island, and Darwin's Finches could be found playing all around town. They spearheaded a small handfull of original musicians who began to book shows together and create a totally new music enviroment. They cut a demo at the prestigious Sugar Hill Studios with a friend Josh Applebee who met the band one Mardi Gras doing sound for one of the Houston bands; The Southern Backtones. One aspect of living on the tourist driven island of Galveston is the opportunity to busk on the sidewalk & on the strand downtown. One can play for hundreds who walk past and occasionally passers by drop a dollar or two into the guitar case. When not playing at the clubs, D. Finches and company could be found playing right on the downtown sidewalk. After a a few lineup changes & out of town shows, the Finches released and produced a live album called MATA MATA, which led to airplay on the local college radio stations. During this time the Finches also embarked on travels around Texas to play shows. At the same time the Finches played every thursday at the Historic Balaniese room with their friend, and another Galveston original artist, Trinity the Critter. Hurricane Ike wrote another chapter in the Darwin's Finches story. The Finches ended up stranded in Austin for two weeks unable to come home & passed the time playing shows & recording an album : Little Wooden Boy in The Belly of Love. D. Finches have since played two live radio shows on KTRU & played at the Indie Houston New year's eve extravaganza which they received flattering press reviews in the local rags. Prompted by unstoppable forces of nature, i.e., the hurricane, The Finches have descended on the Houston scene & continue to play regular shows while working on a full length album.
