Founded in San Francisco in 1973 by refugees from Santana’s backing band, this still active multi-platinum band has gone through several phases. The band’s greatest commercial success came in the late 1970s through the early 1980s.
From their early days as a progressive group to their high-flying power-ballad days of the 80’s, Journey remains one of the most popular bands from the AOR period (Album Oriented Rock). Their balanced attack of Steve Perry’s dynamic vocals, Neal Schon’s guitar work, and Jonathan Cain’s keyboarding consistently proved successful, especially on such hits as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Who`s crying now”, “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” and “Be Good To Yourself.”
In the 70’s, Gregg Rolie (vocals, keyboard), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), George Tickner (guitar) and Robert Fleischmann (vocals) were also part of the band. Their core lineup of Schon, Cain, and Perry are rounded out by bassist [bandmember from=1973 ]Ross Valory[/bandmember], and famed fusion drummer Steve Smith. In recent years, the band has dealt with some lineup changes. Steve Perry left the band in 1998. Steve Smith left afterwards to continue his jazz career.
Starting in 1998, Journey consisted of Schon, Cain, Valory, former Bad English drummer Deen Castronovo (who also handles some of the vocal work in the higher ranges), and singer Steve Augeri, formerly of Tall Stories and Tyketto.
In January 2007, ex-Talisman member Jeff Scott Soto was named official new singer. He had performed most of the dates of the 2006 Journey US tour due to Steve Augeri’s health problems.
In 2007 Jeff Scott Soto and the band parted company. No real reason was given.
On December 5, 2007 Journey introduced fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda (“pin-eh-da”). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.
Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs—in addition to original material—with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland.
Journey released a new album “Revelation” on June 3, 2008, produced by Kevin Shirley. It features one CD with new songs, one CD with re-recordings of many Journey hits, and a DVD of live concert footage.
