First came the dinosaurs, then came ape, then man, followed by man’s desire for great music. Finally, the much-needed, thirst-quenching solution, the missing link of the music world, The Metric System was born. The Metric System is a band unlike any other determined to go down in history, by way of a unique sound, compelling lyrics, and a dedication to their fans.
Their music is mellow for easy listening with lyrical, “poppy” melodies. Accompanied by a unique guitar sound, their lyrics are relatable and meaningful. They truly belong in the Indie/eclectic genre along with musical influences such as Nada Surf, Death Cab for Cutie, Rogue Wave, and The Beatles. The music of The Metric System is easy to sing along with and can be listened to in any setting. Living in Charlotte, NC for most of their lives, David & Sean have been playing together for almost 9 years, calling themselves The Metric System since late October 2010, after adding drummer, Olivia Neal.
Bassist, Sean Beck has come to appreciate many different instruments and genres over the years. He played the sax from age 9 to 13, when he then took up playing bass. Beck’s musical expertise has moved into the realms of vocals, synth, and percussion. “I used to think my constant tapping was just ADD,” says Beck. Beck has grown leaps and bounds as a musician since the days in high school.
David Dorenfeld, Metric System guitarist, began playing guitar at the age of 15 and has since learned to play all of the instruments the band uses. Along with singing, he plays guitar, piano, and drums on the Watchdog EP. Dorenfeld is most excited about his song writing—he writes songs often about inward battles and controversial topics. Avoiding metaphors, he has a clear way of telling you exactly how he feels.
Olivia Neal's uniqueness and driving creativity on the drum set compliments the accompaniment, enhances the musical imagery, and drives the rhythm in a progressive, yet stable nature. Olivia doesn’t strive to stand out, but her authentic selections truly give the music another dimension.
“The stage is where we were meant to be,” the three agree. Their most memorable venue was the Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC. They opened for Givers, an Indie band on the rise signed to Glassnote records. The band has also travelled to Wonderroot, an underground venue in Atlanta, GA. Locally, The Metric System has also frequented Snug Harbor in Charlotte playing with bands like The Winter Sounds and Extraordinaires. Their first show under the name The Metric System was performed at Tremont where they sold 100 tickets and won Battle of the Bands.

"If I can learn just one new thing a day, then I'll continue to grow as a musician and be able to contribute more and more to this [band]. That's all I can really ask for."
