Apolitik [uh-pol-i-tik] is a Canadian band formed in 2007 in Ottawa by singer-songwriters John MacDonald (guitar) and Kevin Kvas (bass), and drummer Adam Pierscianowski. After various lineup changes, keyboardist/oboist Heather MacDonald joined to complete the official roster in 2008. With eclectic instrumentation (oboe, banjo) backing lyrics both sarcastic and heartfelt, Apolitik’s songs do not discriminate emotion or genre, resulting in shows that conflate frivolity with pomp and circumstance, children's lullabies with gangster rap. Part of this diversity stems from the musical backgrounds of the individual members. While many of John’s favourite bands are from the 1960’s, Kevin draws inspiration from Radiohead, Bachthoven, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. As Adam is well-versed in 90’s alternative and possesses encylopedic knowledge of MTV, Heather is classically trained and offers a touch of much-needed musical competence.
