Mostly I think I write two kinds of songs. Romantic love songs, and philosophical poetry on our modern world and how I'm exploring it.
The romantic love song isn't new, but there's no sweeter gift. I simply love capturing a romance and biting into the ripe flesh of it anew every time I sing. A love song for me is a fantasy. Some are carnal, some are innocent. It depends on the girl of course.
The philosophical poetry about our modern world, well, maybe that's just me attempting to figure it all out and put it together for myself, and the best way I know how to do that is to write lyrics to the melodic pattern that's in the air at the time. Songs usually come on in periods of emotional intensity or reflection. I just hear a melody and grab a pencil.
And one more thing... isn't it time we danced to a different beat? An American beat. I'm talkin' about about our roots here people - jazz. Syncopated, multi-dimensional, polytheistic beats. Beats that make you lay down your feets. Beats that move side to side, front to back, and then switch to up and down and all around. Beats that lift skirts. Beats that march down the street. Beats that ride the rails and spit fire into the night air in waltztime.
