The Dustbowl Revival is a Venice, California-based roots collective that merges old school bluegrass, gospel, jug-band, swamp blues and the hot swing of the 1930’s to form a spicy roots cocktail. Known for their wild, hoedown live sets, the Dustbowl Revival isn’t afraid of mixing genres and styles. What’s the sound? Think Old Crow Medicine Show meets Louis Armstrong’s Hot Seven in New Orleans meets Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes on the beaches of LA.
While the live output is a group effort, DBR is the vision of howlin’ and stompin’ frontman Z. Lupetin, who first envisioned putting together a kind of roots supergroup when he moved from Chicago (his father is a blues harp virtuoso who sits in) to sunny Los Angeles four years ago.
Growing steadily from a small string band playing local Southern California clubs (nearly a hundred shows in the last two years), DBR is now a collective of over fifteen musicians with instrumentation that often includes tuba, trombone, clarinet, cornet, trumpet, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, accordion, drums, guitars, double bass, harmonica and plenty of washboard and kazoo for good luck. With an enthusiastic and growing following, The Dustbowl Revival released their LP, You Can’t Go Back To The Garden of Eden in 2010 to rave reviews. Their tune “Dan’s Jam”, a show favorite, has just received Americana Song Of The Year honors by the Independent Music Awards (Tom Waits, Ozzy Osbourne, Aimee Mann judging).
Their new EP and vinyl 7’’ Holy Ghost Station, was released in the summer of 2011 under the auspices of Raymond Richards with Rockets Red Glare (Local Natives, Parson Red Heads). Merging their vintage roots/jazz style with a hip, lose-your-troubles-and-start-moving vibe that rings especially true for these times, the record – laid down on one inch tape - perfectly encompasses the band’s upbeat message. Over the summer and fall months the band has played shows in Seattle, Anchorage, Chicago and San Francisco and all over LA.
