In general, the feature where they show the points increasing while the message bubbles show the song that is causing the increase is somewhat buggy and when it isn't buggy it can be a little bit confusing if you don't understand exactly what's happening. The end result is that any time that those point bubbles are popping up, the points showing at the top of your screen may not be the number of points you actually have. If you ever want to know your actual points while those bubbles are popping up, just look at your profile - it seems to always be right.

A couple things to keep in mind (along the "little bit confusing" line). These all are subject to change, obviously, depending on which way the wind is blowing in Palo Alto, California. And I might not have them quite right anyway. When you first log on, you will see a point total - this is your current number of real points. When you go to any homepage link, you will trigger the daily login bonus (if it's your first login after 12am Pacific Time). The points shown is accurate at that point (with the +20 included). The next time you visit any homepage, you will trigger the "look at all the cool points you've earned" sequence where all the point bubbles float from the bottom. When it first starts this transition, you are shown your total points MINUS the points that it's about to give you (so if you've earned 500 points since the last time you hit the homepage, it will subtract 500 points at this stage). Then each bubble will add the corresponding number of points. If you bump anything right now, your points displayed will be reset to your actual current number of points and the bubbles will continue to add more points (oops - bug). After the points bubbles stop flowing, if you go to the homepage or bump another song, then your points will again reflect your actual total.

Bottom line - just don't trust the points total displayed while the point bubbles are floating. If you want to know your actual points during that time, look at your profile.
