Something to keep in mind:

Clicking ads just to support a site can hurt the people running it - this is considered "click fraud" as you are essentially charging the advertisers without an intention of paying for their products.

Sites with high levels of clicks and low levels of purchases often get penalised if their statistics look disproportionate.

If we users are clicking ourselves without encouragement or coordination by the site it can hardly be considered "click-fraud".

That said, if we click and don't convert, advertisers who track conversions will optimize their buy to other sites. Not really penalizing per se, but the same impact - less income to the site.

So, what can we as users do to help? Check out the musicians featured in the banners -- spend a little time on the promotional sites, engage in their sites. I have been pleasantly surprised by the general quality of the banners (IndieClick banners are definitely better, the Google ones are laughably bad at times). So if an artist is smart enough to support IndieClick and try to talk to us via these banners that SUPPORT the site we, as users should engage their content and encourage advertisers to support sites like t61!

I agree, I wouldn't give out points for donating, that would turn into a Bump fest for the rich and wealthy only...or turn them into Super delegates!

I'll admit, I do use Adblock. However, before I found it, I never clicked on banner ads. Never. Frankly, I'm surprised they still do so well.

Instead, I donated directly, and I'll certainly buy mp3's through affiliate links when something I want to buy comes around. Having said that, I really think the site should make use of more affiliate options. iTunes has an affiliate program. eMusic has an affiliate program -- my preffered site to download from -- and they've also done several strategic partnerships over the years.

However, I think the real bread winner would be to allow musicians to sell directly from the site. I'd put my tracks up for sale instantly. I already use several services to distribute my music, one for singles and one for albums, and I wouldn't mind adding another. Integrate payment info into listener accounts, and make it into a two click process (click to buy and again to confirm) and tracks will fly off the digital shelf.

@craigm: a good number of our ads these days are impression-based, not click through. using adblock does have consequences.

for the record, I enabled the ads for those used here. I don't get the porno or click-the-monkey ads and don't think I've seen a blocked or "missed" ad since James wagged his finger at me long ago :)

(that was at work, so I didn't have permission ... they gave me permission after they realized the site kicked all seven types of a$s.

one of the cool things that's happened as we've grown is that we've been able to use less and less google banners (which is where most of the stupid/inappropriate ads came from).

i absolutely hated those ads.

'Click-the -monkey'. Is that a euphemistic reference to the latest swimwear ads?

It's an amazing thing when two people who start a popular site decide to turn down certain forms of advertising even when they could be making money from it. that is REAL dedication to a cause folks, and should be recognized with donations and gratitude. here is my heartfelt THANK YOU.

I am not sure if there is a way to tie in the sales to t61 other than through the Amazon downloads. However, now that this site has me totally addicted and there are so many artists whose work I MUST own, the site should be able to get some type of spiff for it.

Most of what I have purchased from the artists here has been via itunes or through the artists directly. It may sound nuts, but what about expanding the "store" to tie-in with a site like CDbaby who offers downloads and hard copies or some type of tie-in affiliate with iTunes?

More affiliate options would be nice; CD baby definitely. I'v gone to the extent of modifying amazon urls to include the t61 referral for tracks that don't have a buy link.
