Biography

greetings,

well well well...a lot has been happening over the past few weeks what with "The Way I Am" on an Old Navy commercial and all. i have to tell you guys that it is incredible the amount of exposure that commercial has given me! and it has afforded me many opportunities that i would have never had before! i am very grateful and so happy. and because i am still going at this with out a label, which is fun but scary, i am able to fund my career as a record label would...at least for now!

my question to you all is, when do you call it "selling out" and when do you call it "succeeding"... (+) expand

I saw you on Leno the other night! Great job Ingrid, congratulations on your success!

Congrats again...

ha "selling out" is when you change your style of music or who you are to achieve success, rather than just doing what you have been and "succeeding"

This website offers music lovers , but not to download. The unique twist is that listeners can earn points by bumping up songs that you like that catches on with other listeners and they too can bump the song up, too. Listeners are the ultimate judges of the song's success or failure. It's kind of like American Idol on steroids.

I don't think it's selling out, I think people should be proud of themselves for not listening to only what's played on the radio, but they should also be happy for artists who "make it." Don't they want to share music they think is good with the rest of the world?

In today's music market, with free downloads and all, it's not selling out, it's either selling or not. My record is coming out soon and I hope to sell a song to mega mart to pay myself back. If you have an extra 2 minutes and forty seconds, check out "If I Were President" by The Steak House Mints. Peas.

Really liked The Way I Am, havent seen the commercial yet but im guessing its not over here in the uk. Think you may enjoy listening to some Freddie Stevenson. Gave you a bump! Just in the middle of listening to the others!

Didn't you get the message? It's all about the music, maaaaan. As soon as you see a hint of success or profit from your work, all of the music you've made immediately becomes cliched and worthless.

But seriously, anyone who's complaining that you've found success is probably extremely insecure and only listens to music that they think will make them look cool in front of their Internet "friends" (note that they don't have any real friends because they're obnoxious and smell like onions).

Now, if you re-record your song with a product name replacing the chorus, then yes, that would be selling out. Devo, I'm looking at you and your terrible Swiffer commercial.

As an aside, I just flipped through last week's copy of Birmingham's scene newspaper and saw that you played at City Stages. I am now kicking myself for not going.

as a fellow musician and human being, i wish you wouldn't let it upset you that there are some spoiled brats in your audience who expect you to starve to death in order to live up to their self-righteous ideals. most of them are probably living 100% off their parents, or else they work long hours in a job they hate and resent the fact that others can make money doing something beautiful like making music. don't let it get you down! music is a beautiful gift, and it isn't the musician's fault if a lot of people will only open that gift when it comes wrapped in a tv commercial.

My friend and I was your concert at the Recter tonight in Towson. It was awesome! We both love'd it and had a fabulous time. My friend was so happy when you played "Masochist." It's one of her favorite songs. Awesome set, great job, cant wait to see you again. (paws)

In short, you can never please everyone, nor should you try to. You can only sell out if you stop doing your OWN thing. GL keep it up!

Hello Ingrid, I hope you're well, you certainly sound like you are! About your "selling out" question... I believe the music industry is changing in massive ways, and mostly for the better. It seems that if they so choose, musicians may retain much more control over their music or "product" if you will. This gives them, not a faceless record company the right to choose where their music will or won't be played and how they wish to distribute it. I think there are necessary evils in life, and perhaps advertising is one of them, but for musicians, it can be a means to an end. It can be the bread and butter to allow them to keep working and to progress forward. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

I think many people would prefer to continue their notions of "starving artist" indie musicians, but it just doesn't work in this day and age. The rent and bills still need to get paid, even for people who are not artists or musicians those things are becoming tougher every day. I don't personally believe that what you did was "selling out".

It will be interesting to see what the next decade will bring as far as record companies vs independent artists. With major bands such as Radiohead funding their own album release, and more and more artists following suit, I think it's going to be a very grim future for record companies and the music they flaunt as brilliant when the public certainly knows otherwise. I think there will be a surge of GOOD music, such as yours, coming to public attention. In many ways, the lack of a record company cuts out a huge amount of red tape and middle men. You're brave for doing it, but if it were me, I wouldn't do it any other way.

hi ingrid. good to see you posting new stuff, even though i've already heard it from girls and boys. :) i was watching grey's anatomy the other night and i thought i heard your voice... have they used some new stuff of yours? a duet with a male singer? anyway, just curious. always glad to see such a great artist getting recognition. :)

Just as a data point, I don't watch teevee or listen to the radio or anything, and I bought your CD just because I heard you here ... only to discover that all of my friends had heard you on teevee or the radio and wanted to borrow my cd. I told them to visit T61 or buy their own :)

I was so sad to miss you (twice!) last week in Philly; I'll certainly catch you the next time. Best of luck.
