Artist Bio
Bassist and vocalist Joe Vicars radiates the same salty, organic qualities on stage as he did growing up in the muddy waters of the Lowcountry. He got a taste for music at the age of 11, when he began playing trumpet at his family church in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. His musical endeavors have covered the whole gamut, including jam bands, bluegrass, fusion jazz, rock, reggae, funk, and metal. His music has taken him to southeastern venues in Asheville, NC; Greenville, SC; Charleston, SC; and Savannah, GA., Amsterdam, Netherlands, Cabarete, Dominican Republic, Barcelona, Spain to name a few. A devoted bassist, vocalist and songwriter, Joe performs year-round on Hilton Head Island for thousands of tourists and locals who admire his gritty style and barefoot performances. Since 2004, he’s been bass player and lead singer for Trophy Wife, an alternative rock band playing originals and covers . With his straw cowboy hat and sunglasses, and Spanish moss garnishing the head of his bass, Vicars has a natural flair for luring the audience. In 2005, Joe also became bassist and back-up vocalist for the Martin Lesch Band, a three-piece rock/alternative/experimental band with a honky-tonk jazz undertone. Vicars has recorded with famous record producer Eddie Offord, who produced albums for Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, and 311, and has collaborated with Grammy award-winning musician and songwriter Angie Aparo. He’s worked with several local artists as well, including Zach Deputy, Spare Parts, The Storks, Marshall Dillon Band, and many more. Joe’s experimental creativity with found objects has led to the creation of several homemade instruments, including a bass guitar and an Australian dijeridoo, both of which are used regularly in gigs. When off stage, Vicars’s coastal roots draw him to kitesurfing, sailing, scuba diving, backpacking, and composing on his sailboat.
