Cicetti howled to Morze one heart-punch oily night, “These itches aint for scratching, they for starin’ headlights in the eyes.”
Morze caught the wind between rough fingers, showed it the business end of his gun. A’scared and a’shakin’, the obedient wind followed the muddy rivers and the bone white coast north to Bedlam City.
Jurin, black wings greasy, heard the south wind’s message and showed it no mercy. As a crow flies, he slices the sky south, raking the land below with his piercing stare.
Leaves fallin’ for fear of life, They Three descend upon a shit-fire clearing a’top Devils Back Ridge. Snapping and growling, they parley ‘n circle.
Now, the right-of-mind around these parts ‘ave long fled old Devils Back, and the off-of-mind learn hard lessons hard. Twisted trees all arthritic ‘n sick make fresh kills spoil and sharp eyes trick.
So undisturbed, the schemin’ and screamin’ went on all night, carrying on ‘cross the valleys, bleeding into the dreams o’ fair haired children so far away in bed.
Just as the hour of the wolf strikes in, a shake of the earth quiets them jackals. Underneath the blood-blackened soil, the deep rumble so fathomless ‘n lost joins those three conspirators. They knew its name as Brown, for his legacy precedes him. Hell, even the squirmin’ earthworms knew what to call ‘em.
Now four danced among the deceiving firelight, wailing their bloody murder.
When dawn broke, the sky spilled red. The fish float all belly up. The towns wake stiff and shivering.
The words are writ, the song is sung. The Midnight Sounds they ‘ave begun.
And all the while and unperturbed, the girl with the silver eyes ‘n whalebone throat prepares to go a’hunting again.
