What is the Opposite of Faith?
‘Exactly’ says J, the primary sonic architect of the group. ‘The name itself is meant to be a question more than a statement. We all have these known patterns that we rely on-our own definition of reality, but sometimes they just don‘t work...and what do you do when what you understand doesn't work...? That’s the question that defines who you really are…”
With strains of Massive Attack and A Perfect Circle, sharpened with technical and creative edges, The Opposite of Faith gives the feeling of predatory pursuit as much as being deeply lost in thought, questioning everything with a desire to know more. “I wanted this project to have more edge than some of the rock/electronica projects I’d heard’ J says, ‘a more aggressive feel, but not with distorting guitars or something-I’m trying to avoid all clichés. I want that dark, seething feeling that gives the listener focus.’
The project is also about constructing and deconstructing music and art. The logo-a stylized Ouroborus, symbolizes the cycle of creation and destruction. J says ‘This, for me, is the creative process of transition-once something has changed form it has become something different-creation is destruction, destruction is creation…That cycle from the blank canvas to what it became…that’s what’s real…’
The band is made up of enchanting Grammy winning Vocals of Latrice Barnett-who is making a transition from her usual House Diva role, The Legendary DJ Quest-one of the founders of Turntablism- who is pushing the experimental edge further after already creating the Hip Hop band Live Human, J’s dark complex bass lines, composition and lyricism all centered around the intricate, power house drumming of Joel Griffin. Each and every member is pushing the boundaries with their instrument from effects experimentation with vocals, to combining non drum sounds to create layered sample style beats-the goal to the band is to make something unique. J says of DJ Quest “I’m so glad Quest is open minded, he’s letting me do these completely insane MIDI and effect set ups and he’s totally into it when I show up with some odd scratch riff based on some twisted layered keyboard sound I concocted-he’s doing things I’ve NEVER heard a DJ even attempt to do, it completely fits this group though…’
The Opposite of Faith is the first projects out of The Apothecary organization, a media artist group that looks to combining creative ideas to produce innovative music and video projects. ‘There’s much more to come, I’ve spent a whole lot of time conceiving this whole thing…it’s gonna be something really special…I think things will be a little different by the time we’re done…’
A storm is coming, and sometimes, that’s exactly what’s needed…
