Santiago, Chile

about +
Known for their elegant grooves, impeccable playing and powerful live presentations, where even the most indifferent get their groove on. Widely recognized as one of the most important Acid Jazz bands in latin america. Their songs are packed with funk, disco, r&b;, pop, jazz, rock and electro… they call themselves PapaNegro, a name taken from the last pontiff before the arrival of the antichrist.

The history of this band goes back to the year 2000, year in which they win first place in the most important band competition in Chile. That day they got up, played and conquered more than 8000 spectators, which definitely caught the eye of the media throughout the country. Three years later, they publish their first álbum SuperActivo, which was nominated for album of the year at the Altazor Awards. From this record came the singles, "Wokman", "Todo Está Bien", "PapaNegro" and "Cortentrete", all of them with heavy rotation on national tv and radio, along with MTV and other music channels.

Their much awaited second release came in 2005, with the single "Autonomía", whose video was chosen video of the year in suena.cl and featured Jorge González from the mythical Chilean band Los Prisioneros. Other singles were "Abusé" and "Oye Amigo", the latter being the theme song for a children's television show called BLOCK!.

In 2007 the group made important changes in the realm of music distribution. They abandoned the traditional ways and decided to distribute freely through the Internet their third cut named "7". This new album was launched on their website on July 7, 2007 (07/07/07) and included 7 songs, 7 visual artists and 7 days in which one track was released daily along with it's lyrics and video clip in a blog site, so the feedback from the fans was instantaneous. The project generated a peak of thirty thousand downloads and the choice of the first single was left to the fans who voted for "Nocaut", which had a huge amount of airplay. With this project and its thirty thousand downloads, PapaNegro stood out as a pioneer in the free music download arena, being constantly compared to what Radiohead and other bands did a few months later.

2010 is the year of "Placer Automático", PapaNegro's latest recording. An album that included important changes within the band, now definitely made up of 5 members, Guayi, Carlinhos, Mario, Pato and new guitarist Chany, and for the first time working with a producer, “Tata” Bigorra from chilean bands Los Tetas and Funk Attack. The new proposal incorporated new sounds and elements of electropop, seeking to keep their place as one of the most energetic, persistent and charismatic funk bands in Chile. Their first single “Fuego En La Disco” was released on MySpace months before the record was out and reached two thousand plays on the first day. After that, the band had several presentations associated with brands like Kingston, Lucky Strike and Nokia. The second single, now with the album published, was “Placer Automático” which was accompanied by a powerful and stylish video by Piero Medone. This clip got heavy rotation on MTV Latino and ranked at number 65 on the 100 most wanted list of 2010. Right now PapaNegro is preparing for various shows throughout Chile, including a mega spectacle as the opening act for Jamiroquai. The band also has other projects for 2011 up their creative sleeves, so we’ll see what musical surprises they will bring their fans this year.
