When I used to write music or do some arranging I'd look at tons of photos. Now I just go to picasa or flickr or deviantArt and just use the the random search button. I do the same when I'm writing prose and fiction.

Another thing that works for me is to go to a park or even sit on my doorstep and try to listen to everything and focus on the stuff that's barely audible until it becomes clear. It's amazing how much we can hear outside of music when we start to focus as if we're picking out a single instrument in a huge orchestra. There's a lot of percussion in everyday life and great rhythm too.
