Growing up alongside what became known as hip hop group A State of Mind (ASM), Count Everest's early influences included A Tribe Called Quest, Notorious BIG, Pharcyde and many others from the early 90s era of hip hop. Later developing a penchant for the textured and progressive sounds of the like of Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo and AIM, his musical journey took a turn towards the trip-hop and electronic. Though primarily playing guitar, Fortune's Cooking is a journey through the landscape of multiple acoustic and MIDI instruments as well as samplers. It is the result of an unquenchable thirst to discover new sounds, master new instruments, and incorporate old samples into a new acoustic environment. The genre-spanning album is a testament to the desire not to be limited by one set of influences. The result of a conviction that true cooking is limited only by the ingredients at one's disposal.
