SEAN HAYDEN

Vancouver, BC

about +
Although his self-titled debut EP album began its conception in a tiny 11x7 foot bedroom in Boston, MA, (where he used his mattress as sound proofing from the train just outside his door step), independent Canadian ‘jazz cat’ turned singer-songwriter (and then some) Sean Hayden managed to put out eight smoldering tracks that effortlessly run the gamut between in-your-face rock instrumentals and yearning singer-songwriter melodies to reflective lyrical ballads and funky upbeat light-heartedness.

“I started as a rock kid, then at high school I got really into jazz”, Hayden says “but none of it was all really me. It took me a while to figure out, but I basically had an epiphany. I just knew what I wanted to do.”

Whilst Sean was retiring from his days as a Berklee College of Music student, the album would ultimately be recorded in ‘Beantown’ at the renowned Mix One Studios, where many famous artists (such as John Mayer & Aerosmith) have been past clients. What resulted from those recordings was a style emanating sultry-sweet organic singer-songwriter rock, reddened with smatterings of contemporary pop-jazz throughout. Even more surprising, Sean would reveal something he had never done before on the EP: his singing.

“I never really sang before. I was always so focused on the guitar or drums or writing or production or any number of other music related things. I knew though if I wanted to go down this new musical path, I needed to learn and fast!”

Locked in and geared up, the already multi-instrumentalist and now singer set to work. The self-penned gems of the EP include the buoyant-reflective single “Still On My Mind”, the roller coaster “Can’t Help Myself”, the sweet-nasty “Show You My Way”, and Hayden’s cleansing “Wash Away, as well as the lyrical longing of “Home”.

Hayden’s trip from then to now is anything but an overnight success, (as he’s been honing his musical craft since the age of eight), and it doesn’t look like he has any plans as of yet to cool off his jets and catch some zzzz’s. In the midst of a busy touring schedule, ever-growing success, and a quickly expanding fan base, the 23-year-old Sean has already begun writing for his 2nd album.

“If you’re going to pursue music as your life’s work, you need to understand that there is no final destination. There’s no retirement, no end goal - it’s scary and brilliant all at the same time. The never ending journey is big a reason why I love it so much!”
