Burial is the artist I respect most by far. Deep, meaningful tunes that have so much heart and soul put into them. He makes them for himself and no one else and that really shows.
ok, so I downloaded his self titled album... and I LOVE it! maybe it's not just hype, there are some fucking good sounds coming from this guy. but still... the whole "ooo no-one knows who I am" thing, and the crackling which I can tell is deliberate, plus the fact that his album was released so broadly and so quickly picked up... it's a bit.. i dunno, does anyone know what I mean? it just smells a bit fishy. he obviously had a lot of cash backing him up to be released to such critical acclaim. the crackling and anonymity are just tools to generate more hype, and it seems that if he made an awesome song that wasn't 'low key' enough, he'd throw it out. just seems a tad not genuine. but having said that, i -do- love his music, just not this song. sorry. rant rant rant. i'll be quiet now.
of course it would, i'm an independent artist low on the radar. it would be awesome, but i would still be amazed. i've since done some research on burial and i guess it doesn't surprise me anymore that he would be this popular on thesixtyone, but being popular doesn't always equate with good music as any listener knows. i think in burial's case it's a lot about hype and marketing, although i will try to grab one of his albums and see what all the fuss is about ... hey i just realised in that sense hype worked. mind you i'm not gonna pay for it.
Peach Tree - would it amaze you if the same amount of people bumped one of your songs?
You're right on one thing though - artists can grow from hearing both positive and negative criticism, but criticism without intellect or insight is just trash talk. And the only people who appreciate that are others who spew the same garbage. If the best critique you have to offer is "crap track," then just step away from your computer, go pick up a couple past issues of Rolling Stone magazine, and read. After you've learned a couple new adjectives, come back and try again.
it just amazed me how many people bumped it. but you're right, it's a matter of taste. as to "why comment if you don't even like it" - if an artist only receives positive comments they will believe that everyone likes the song, honesty provides some grounding that people appreciate. and believe me i'm far from jealous.
if u dont like the song then why would you even comment it??? to peach tree, dont put people down on the music they like, this is a sweet track and if u dont think so...then go listen to sumthin else.
@ Peach Tree: obviously it's a matter of taste, if you like a track or not, but the points you're criticising are simply astonishing. No wonder Burial is so successful, while you're not. Burial is one of the most important electronic musicians of our time, important doesn't mean to like it, but your criticism sounds nothing but jealous.
i'm sorry, but "if you don't like this you're deaf" doesn't gel with me. this is a crap track. really horrible modern-rnb style vocals over mediocre beats and bass. where's the imagination? where's the spine-tingling?
