Sometimes the original melody is fine albeit sparse in a song.... Tori Amos' greatest hits collection Tales of a Librarian features new 'mixes' where the only noticeable changes are added strings and turning up certain vocal backgrounds. But they change the complete ambience of the track and add a little oomph if you will. To me, if the feel changes, it's an alternate mix or remix. Just because a slow song didn't become a house track...
