Susan Cowsill Highlights NOLA Songfest

NOLA’s Susan Cowsill will join master songwriter Jimmy Webb, (By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Up Up And Away, Macarthur Park), on Friday December 5th and Saturday December 6th, at the New Orleans Songwriters’ Festival. The sponsor of this event is The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Since its inception 80 years ago, ASCAP has been representing songwriters, composers, and publishers. The purpose of the New Orleans Songwriters Festival is to promote interaction between New Orleans and Louisiana-based writers and writers from around the world.

April 21, 2009 will mark the release of Susan’s second recording, currently titled “Lighthouse.” In all, she has graced more than 150 albums, amounting to well over 10 million recordings sold.

During Susan’s decade with New Orleans’ roots-pop super group The Continental Drifters, her personally charged songwriting graced three widely acclaimed albums and a decade’s worth of riveting performances. Susan’s vocal talents have supported recordings from artists as diverse as Dwight Twilley, Nanci Griffith, T-Rex, Giant Sand, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Carlene Carter. The Bangles and Hootie and the Blowfish have covered her compositions.

Susan’s 2005 solo album, Just Believe It, is being re-released, remastered and remixed in 2009. The Cowsills - with original members and siblings Bob, Susan and Paul Cowsill- will embark upon a major world tour in early 2009 in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the group’s 1969 smash hit, “Hair.”

Susan’s husband, NOLA drummer Russ Broussard, Bob’s son Ryan Cowsill, Paul’s son Brendan Cowsill, and bassist Tad Armstrong will round out the group.

The tour will visit more than 60 cities around the globe and include television, literary and sponsorship components.

Susan Cowsill Band Adds Best Roots Rock Award to Vocalist Honors

New Orleans' music magazine OffBeat staged its annual Best of the Beat Awards at
the House of Blues and awarded Susan Cowsill honors for Best Country-Folk-Roots
Rock Band or Performer on January 18. Cowsill also won Best Female Vocalist Honors at an earlier ceremony. The evening’s highlights included a performance by lifetime achievement award winner Wardell Quezergue and his New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Revue featuring guest stars Jean Knight, Dorothy Moore and Shannon McNally.

2008 began with Cowsill garnering top honors in the Big Easy as musical artists still struggle to bring music home almost three years post Katrina. Cowsill suffered devastating personal losses with the death of her older brother, Barry Cowsill, in the floodwaters. She has vowed to stay on and dedicated her OffBeat Awards to the City of New Orleans.

“I am giving these awards back to New Orleans,” Cowsill said. “We will share them as we move forward both in joy and in pain and rebuild this city.”

Susan Cowsill’s solo album Just Believe It won critical praise from titans of the music industry. Besides an uncanny knack for getting to ... (+) expand

Susan Cowsill deserves commercial success more than any other artist I know. She has more than "paid her dues". That "Just Believe It" was released shortly before Katrina hit was such unfortunate timing but I still have hope that it will "make it". Rolling Stone lauded JBI and called Susan a woman "in the prime of her singing and songwriting life". I truly hope this sentiment is echoed soon by music lovers, the media and the entire music industry.
