Tomorrow is Already Here is the solo project of singer/songwriter Garret Gengler.
Think Beck – Mutations, or Sufjan Stevens without the banjo. Belle and Sebastian. The pretty stuff Pete Townshend wrote that Moonie protested. Those boys from Liverpool. Just good songs, you know the kind. Sweet melodies, intimate vocals, and chamber pop instrumentation (acoustic guitar, drums, bass, keys, piano, strings) combine with tasteful experimental touches to bring a unique sound to life.
The 2008 debut album First Words came together over the course of three years, working alone, late at night, when kids and dogs are sleeping. In the margins of a busy life, Garret carves out time to keep writing and recording, to keep improving. It’s a slow process, but like crushing coal under pressure, eventually you get a few diamonds.
Three songs on the album feature guest appearances. Cale Parks of Aloha fame steals the show on two tracks with his inventive, powerful drumming (Silver King and This Night), and Mark Stolk and Shane Sanders help out on Modern Times.
First Words was recorded and mixed in Garret’s project studio in Champaign, Illinois.
