"Not many artists start their music careers by covering a Britney Spears song. But after recording it as a joke in a studio, Tyler Thurman, a.k.a. Dorian Grey, found himself--along with cousin Nick Layman and some friends--offered a record deal by a Long Islands studio exec. The band that resulted, The Pinstripes, broke up after a difference in musical opinions, but Thurman, and soon after Layman, formed a new project: Tonight’s Entertainment. Their EP, Drive-By Shootings, and their other work blends somber and ethereal vocals, piano melodies, percussion, guitars, and electronic beats to make songs that are cinematic in their scope but as accessible as snapshots of daily life. Ambient beats give way to a recording of a drunk's attempts at singing; background chatter accompanies a dreamlike song about insomia. Thurman and Layman both have an excellent ear for production--and a great ability to capture people in the simple act of being human."
