Following up 2009’s well received debut EP “O.K.,” Vault Thieves returns with their full length debut album. Phantoms expands upon the rich elements of their original EP, creating an album full of diverse themes and tones. Phantoms was conceived and produced by Michael Giardina. Songs on the album were written by Michael Giardina, with co-writing by vocalist Monica Leon.
Vault Thieves is a collective of Southern Californian artists from different musical backgrounds; bringing together talented musicians from such groups as Chase Long Beach, Jacob and Matthew, Redlab, and Keeyah. The group is focused on creating a new voice in alternative music. Influenced by such artists as Radiohead, Broken Social Scene, and Grizzly Bear-- they create a sound that is both unique and accessible.
Phantoms, while darker in lyrical content and mood than “O.K,” still finds a strong upbeat footing on such songs as “Yes Maybe No” and “Take it Away.” Meagan Christy’s trumpet work on “So What” is reminiscent of later Beatles albums. Guitarist Joe Cooper lends crashing guitars and stirring melodies to the entire album; becoming especially evocative on “Phantoms” and “To Sleep, To Dream.”
