So, what are we really? Machines trying to adopt the human ways of free will and emotions, or humans trying to adopt the sturdiness and indifference of machines? The urge of being less affected and controlled by our sentiments in every day life is a well-recognizable feeling for most people. What if we just had a button implant we could push once in a while when our surrounding world seems particularly troublesome and in that very moment become immune to the artillery flying towards us? We could be machines when wished for.

But, would the consequences of such a button be favourable in the long run? Wouldn’t we invite all kinds of evils into our world when, with our button in mind, we knew that we wouldn’t be harmed by them? The world would slowly fall to pieces around us, while a controlled numbness would spread in our veins, leaving us no desire to change things to the better. A truth could be, that we are gradually becoming that machinery, even without the button available.

This is not a wake-up call. It is rather a reflection on how we are beginning to realise the true nature of our machine-like mental selection, and how the feeling of not caring is starting to itch, drilling down to the foundation of our person and morality. No wonder people are stretching their arms backwards, reaching out for the impressionable mentality of the past. Longing for something. Even at daylight machines are looking at the stars, dreaming.

So, what are we really?
