Yajna Vedana is a post-rock outfit from Colombo that was formed mid-2010. What began as a solo project of Imaad Majeed, going by the moniker "St. Fallen", eventually grew into the concept of a band that would aim to break through the conventianalities of heavy metal music, in the local scene as well as elsewhere.
Taking Eastern influences, such as the band name which is derived from a sanskrit phrase "vedana yajna", which translates to "sacrifice of senses", or in context "an offering of feeling", and putting it into a form that has its own sound, and its own message.
The music is characterized by the emphasis on instrumentation, and the "feeling" of the song in itself, and bringing that out through each respective instrument by the musician in their own way, through their own experiences.
Atma Shatakam, the first song to be composed and played takes it lyrics from a song by the same name written over a thousand years ago by Adi Shankara. The song itself relies mostly on the instrumentation, which goes on for 18 minutes, taking the song through as many of the motions possible. This is what the band attempts with every song, be it an original or a cover, to milk every last drop, and yet leave you with your thrist quenched.
The band has finished composing material for their first album, "Trimurti", and is currently in the process of polishing up the compositions and writing material for their future releases. There is no date of release announced as of yet, but 2011 will see the studio debut of Yajna Vedana, with three tracks running at nearly 45 minutes all in all.
Trimurti will consist of Brahmacharya, Narayana, and Atma Shatakam, each song representing one aspect of the Trimurti; Creation, Preservation, and Transformation (through destruction). Yajna Vedana is an indepedent band and is not on any record label, nor does the band have any associations with any organization, religious, musical, or otherwise.
